 2nd Division

Positioned north of the 1st Division, the 2nd Division will also attack Thelus. Its objectives are similar to the 1st Division's, that is, to capture the main German trench position in front of Thelus. By the end of the day, the 2nd Division has also achieved all its objectives.

The 2nd Division suffered the least number of casualties of all the divisions.

Private Ellis Sifton of the 18th Battalion single-handedly eliminated German opposition while advancing against the second line on the morning of April 9. His company was held up by a hidden machine-gun nest - Sifton ran forward lobbing hand grenades and attacking the enemy gun crew with his bayonet, killing them all. By this selfless act he saved countless lives but not his own. He was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.
