songs

The songs listed below give the listener a glimpse of the mood of wartime that books and images cannot convey. Some of the songs included were not war songs at all, but songs which happened to become popular during the Great War and have since become inseparably identified with it. These would be It's a Long Way to Tipperary, There's a Long,Long Trail and Roses of Picardy. Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and My Sweetheart is Somewhere in France were the most popular, sentimental home-front songs during the war - and are an interesting contrast to the bright spirited number Pack up Yours Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag.
